Strength Through Diversity

A Culture of Inclusivity

Creating an environment where everyone can thrive

At Saint Luke’s, diversity isn’t simply a box we check or a class we teach. For us, it’s a judgment-free culture we intentionally cultivate. We know a staff that best reflects the ever-changing world around us is one that will drive innovation, foster creativity, and grow in their careers – in a way that no uniform workforce could.

We’re proud of the rich culture that’s resulted from our efforts, making Saint Luke’s a great fit for you – no matter who “you” are.

What diversity means to us

A commitment we honor, a value we strive for

Saint Luke’s was one of the nation’s first hospitals to make diversity a top priority. Over the years, we’ve endeavored to equip our staff with the tools to handle sensitive situations involving cultural, linguistic, spiritual or ethnic differences.

It is because of our inclusion initiatives that we’re a stronger, more compassionate health system – with a diverse staff better prepared to serve our diverse communities. And our communities are taking note, as shown by the recognition we’ve received from the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce, Urban League of Kansas City, and Project Equality.

By celebrating each other’s unique strengths, Saint Luke’s is raising the bar on workplace satisfaction and empowering employees to impact our communities.

Jennifer’s Story

“Plans to stay at Saint Luke’s Health System until she retires. After years of nursing school and clinical rotations, Jennifer submitted her one and only resume to Saint Luke’s CVOR and was ecstatic to be hired as a new graduate. Jennifer feels grateful to be surrounded by a fantastic, unbelievably skilled team who inspire her. She believes that every team member forms a family bond. And combining diverse talents, backgrounds, ideas and experiences will ensure every patient has the best outcome possible.” – Jennifer B., CVOR RN

Diversity in action

We walk our beliefs every day

In theory, diversity is simple. But living out a commitment to inclusivity requires organizational effort – and Saint Luke’s takes this promise seriously.

Educators & Councils

As an employee, from your first day on the job through deep into your tenure, we’ll support you with Diversity & Inclusion Educators and Councils. One of our great successes is a series of Perspective Lunch and Learns – a new topic this year was Exploring the Muslim Faith.

Over the years, we’ve worked closely with the LGBTQ community – from our June celebration of Pride month, to obtaining the Human Rights Campaign’s HEI designation, to posting openings with the and the MAGLCC website.

We reach out to prospective talent in creative new ways by taking our hiring efforts directly to the Urban League and empower our staff to volunteer with partners in our Social Impact Initiative. You’ll also find Saint Luke’s at the Guadalupe Center, assisting seniors on resume writing and interview skills. If there’s a community that wants to work with us, we make the effort to get to know them.

Outreach and inflow

How our diversity protocol impacts business policy

At Saint Luke’s, our dedication to diversity extends beyond those we employ. As we reach out to the world around us, we are committed to build business relationships with minority and women-owned suppliers and service providers. And as that same world comes knocking at our door, we receive all our patients with equal compassion. We don’t discriminate for any reason, including, but not limited to: race, age, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, or physical/mental disability.
